Safer Driving For Young People: Motability Launches Drive Smart
The Motability Scheme is about to launch a brand-new initiative called Drive Smart, a telematics system developed to encourage safer driving for younger drivers. In this guide, the experts at MotaClarity explain what Drive Smart is, how it works, who it applies to, and what it could mean for customers with a Motability lease.
What Is Drive Smart?
Motability is about to launch Drive Smart, a telematics programme aimed at improving road safety for younger drivers on the Motability Scheme.
The system uses a small “black-box” device that connects with a smartphone app to monitor driving behaviour such as speed, braking, cornering and distraction. The idea isn’t to “catch people out” but to encourage safe, confident driving and reward it.
Who Needs To Use It?
Drive Smart will be required for all drivers listed on a Motability insurance policy if at least one of those drivers is under 30. That means it isn’t only the youngest driver being monitored, everyone on the policy takes part.
How Does It Work?
Once the device is installed, the Drive Smart app starts collecting driving data. Each driver receives a score, and safe driving can earn up to £160 in e-gift cards every year.
It’s not meant to be about penalties, but it is worth noting that repeatedly unsafe driving could affect future eligibility for the Motability Scheme.
Is My Data Shared?
Motability has been clear that the data gathered is private and won’t be shared with anyone, unless it’s legally required or linked to an incident such as a crash or insurance claim.
Why This Matters
For many younger disabled drivers, safe driving isn’t just about confidence, it’s about independence. Programmes like Drive Smart help to build good habits early on while offering a little extra reward along the way.
Drive Smart: Your Questions Answered
Do I have to pay for Drive Smart?
No – the telematics device and app are provided as part of the Motability Scheme insurance package.
What happens if I don’t drive safely?
Motability won’t fine or charge you, but consistently unsafe driving may affect your ability to lease another car in the future.
Can all smartphones connect to the app?
Most modern smartphones are compatible. Motability provides support if you need help setting it up.
Will my insurance cost more if my score is low?
No. Drive Smart doesn’t change how much you pay for your insurance, it’s about rewarding safe behaviour, not raising costs.
If you’re a younger driver under 25 and want to know which vehicles you’re eligible to drive, make sure to check out the range of fantastic Motability cars listed on MotaClarity that people under the age of 25 can drive.
