Boot Hoist FAQ's
How to lift a heavy wheelchair from a car boot?
Lifting a heavy wheelchair into or out of a vehicle can be difficult and may put strain on your back, shoulders and arms. A car boot hoist provides a safer alternative by lifting the wheelchair or powerchair at the touch of a button and lowering it directly into the boot.
Boot hoists are available with a range of lifting capacities and can be tailored to suit both your mobility device and vehicle, helping you travel more independently with less physical effort.
How much does it cost to install a car hoist?
The cost to install a boot hoist varies depending on the exact boot hoist you require. Compact hoists designed for lighter wheelchairs, such as our Brig-Ayd 40kg 2-Way, costs £1,295.00 (fully fitted, with a 3 year warranty) compared to one of our heavy-duty hoists, like the Autochair Smart Lifter LP, costs £2,095.00 (fully fitted, with a 3 year warranty).
Following a mobility assessment, we will recommend the specific boot hoist your car and mobility device require, and will provide an exact quote.
How long does it take to fit a boot hoist?
Most boot hoists can be installed within a few hours by a professional vehicle adaptation engineer. Installation times can vary depending on the vehicle and hoist model being fitted.
Following installation, a full demonstration is provided to ensure you feel confident using your new hoist.
What is the best vehicle to carry a mobility scooter?
The best vehicle for carrying a mobility scooter depends on the size and weight of the scooter. SUV’s and MPV’s offer sufficient boot space for a vehicle hoist and mobility device. However we can fit our boot hoists into compact hatchbacks and family cars as well, depending on the size of your mobility device.
Our mobility assessments can help identify the most suitable vehicle and hoist combination.
Is specialist training required to use a hoist?
No. Our range of hoists is designed to be simple and intuitive to operate. Following installation, one of our vehicle adaptation specialists will provide a full demonstration, ensuring you feel confident using the hoist safely and independently.
What is the weight capacity of a hoist?
We offer a range of vehicle hoists to suit different mobility devices. Within our range, we have some of the most powerful hoists available, capable of lifting mobility scooters and powerchairs weighing up to 200kg.
Can a hoist be installed on any type of vehicle?
Our range of hoists can be fitted into hundreds of different vehicles, including manual and automatic cars, as well as petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric models. For specific compatibility advice, we recommend contacting our team for a vehicle assessment.
What is the maximum lifting height of a boot hoist?
The maximum lifting height will be relative to your vehicle. Contact our team for specific compatibility advice.
How long does a hoist typically last?
If well maintained and operated as advised, a hoist should last for many years.
Can the parcel shelf still be used once a hoist has been fitted?
In most instances, the parcel shelf has to be removed whilst using the boot hoist.
Can my hoist be transferred if I change my vehicle?
When the time comes to change car, we recommend contacting our team to check compatibility of your hoist with the new vehicle and confirm if we can facilitate a transfer.
Is it possible to load more than one item when using the car hoist?
Depending on compatibility we can fit lifting brackets to multiple mobility devices for use with the hoist. However, in most instances, only one mobility device can be lifted and stowed at once.
Can I keep my rear seats up when using a hoist?
This is dependent on the length of your mobility device and the length of your boot. For specific advice, we always recommend contacting our team to check and confirm.
