FAQs

What is LOLER?

LOLER stands for the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. These regulations are designed to ensure that lifting equipment is used safely and properly. They apply to all employers and self-employed individuals who provide lifting equipment for use at work.

Who can carry out LOLER inspections?

LOLER inspections must be conducted by a competent person. This is someone with the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to examine lifting equipment thoroughly and identify any defects. This could be a trained in-house engineer or an external qualified inspection provider like the team here at Mobility in Motion. Our LOLER certified technicians cover the whole of the UK.

How often should they be carried out?

LOLER inspections should typically be carried out:

  • Every 6 months for lifting equipment used for lifting people
  • Every 6 months for lifting accessories (such as slings and shackles)
  • Every 12 months for all other lifting equipment

However, the inspection frequency may vary based on the equipment, usage, and risk assessment.

What happens if I don’t have a LOLER certificate?

If you fail to have a valid LOLER inspection and certificate, you are in breach of health and safety law. This could lead to legal action, insurance issues, and increased risk of accidents. Operating without a current LOLER certificate can result in fines or prosecution and may put your employees at serious risk.
