Nissan Qashqai Hybrid, one of the accessible family cars available through Adapt & Drive

Accessible family cars

Family cars balance space, safety and comfort, and they take more adaptation than most people expect. A boot hoist, a swivel seat or a set of hand controls can turn an ordinary family car into one that works for a disabled driver or passenger.

We fit the adaptations before the car reaches you, and you own it outright. Talk to our team about which models suit what you need.

Do you need a WAV, or will an adapted family car work?

A Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle is converted so a wheelchair user can travel without leaving their chair, as a passenger or in some cases as the driver. Access is by ramp or lift, the floor is lowered or the roof raised for headroom, and the wheelchair is held by a tie-down and restraint system.

If the person travelling needs to stay seated in their own chair, a WAV may be the right route, and a specialist WAV converter is the place to start.

Plenty of people who doubt they could manage a standard car seat find they can, once the right adaptation is fitted. Some need a single adaptation, such as a swivel seat or a boot hoist for a wheelchair or scooter.

Others combine several, perhaps hand controls or a left-foot accelerator alongside a transfer plate. Otherwise it stays a normal family car, with the same boot and the same seats.

Driving adaptations can also work for more than one driver. Hand controls leave the standard pedals in place, steering aids detach in seconds, and a twin flip left-foot accelerator switches sides depending on who is driving. That lets the whole household share the car.

Most of the families we assess find an adapted family car works for them. The assessment settles it either way, and we will advise you on the most appropriate solution for you and your family.

Accessible family car FAQs

Are family cars spacious enough to handle bulky vehicle adaptations?

Usually, yes. Boot capacity matters less than a few specific measurements. A boot hoist needs a boot opening wide and tall enough for your folded wheelchair or scooter, and a low sill with a level floor makes loading easier. A swivel seat depends on how wide the front door opens and how high the seat sits. Your mobility assessment checks all of this against the car you have in mind before anything is fitted.

Can I fit a wheelchair hoist in the boot of a family car?

Yes, as long as the boot opening suits your wheelchair or scooter. The size and weight of your device decide which hoist you need, and heavier scooters need a larger, more robust hoist. Some hoists also take up extra height inside the boot, so a large scooter can mean folding down a rear seat. Our guide shows you how to measure your device, and our team can check which hoists suit you and your car.

Why should I consider a family car for my mobility needs?

A family car gives you passenger seating, a practical boot and room to add the adaptations you need. That suits households where a disabled driver or passenger shares the car with everyone else. If the person travelling needs to stay in their wheelchair for the journey, a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle will serve them better.

Why might my price differ from the illustrative price?

The prices shown are illustrative only and can vary based on an individual’s financial circumstances. Vehicle purchases and any finance agreements are entered into directly with the supplying dealer or a third-party finance provider.
