Motability EV Charger Explained: Hassle-Free Charging for Your Electric Vehicle

With more Motability customers choosing electric cars than ever before, one of the first questions many people ask is: how will I charge it? The good news is, if you’ve got off-street parking, a Motability EV charger makes home charging simple. Here, the team at MotaClarity explain how the Motability Scheme helps you to charge your electric vehicle (EV) at home, and how to make the most of the new smart-charging features available today.
Why Motability EV Charging at Home Is a Game-Changer
The big appeal of going electric is convenience. Just like charging your phone overnight, plugging your car in at home means you can start each day with a full battery and no range anxiety. For most people, this makes daily driving easier, cheaper and more relaxing.
Motability understands that, which is why they offer a fully fitted home charge point with every one of their customers first EV leases – at no extra upfront cost to you.
What’s Included With a Motability Home Charger?
When you lease a full battery electric vehicle through the Motability Scheme, you’ll usually receive an Ohme Home Pro charger installed at your property. This is a smart 7.4 kW unit that’s compatible with all modern EVs. The process is straightforward and handled by Ohme’s installation team.
Motability also provides a Go Charge app and card, which makes it easy to tap and charge at over 50,000 public charge points across the UK – just in case you ever need to top up away from home.
Meet The Latest Ohme Home Pro
The 2025 version of the Ohme Home Pro is one of the smartest chargers available. It can now charge two vehicles at the same time, which is perfect if there’s more than one EV in the household. It also works with solar panels if you have them, allowing you to power your car with renewable energy.
Perhaps best of all, it automatically schedules charging during off-peak hours, when electricity is often cheaper – saving you money without you having to think about it. On the right energy tariff, a full charge could cost under £3, compared to £10-12 on a standard plan.
What to Expect During Your Motability EV Charger Installation
The first step is a short online survey where you’ll upload photos of your fuse board, parking space, and surrounding area. This helps the installation team plan the job. Ohme will then contact you to book a date for fitting.
A standard install usually takes around two hours, though more complex setups may take longer. The engineer will guide you through how to use the charger and the app before they leave.
In some cases, extra work may be needed – for example, if the charger needs to be placed a long distance from your fuse board, or if your home electrics need an upgrade. In these situations, you may be asked to contribute toward the additional cost.
Not Having a Driveway Remains a Real Barrier to EV Adoption
Despite a 27% year-on-year increase in on-street chargers across the UK (according to the Department for Transport), the proportion designed specifically for disabled users remains unchanged at just 2.2%.
More than 40% of UK households don’t have off-street parking, so public chargers are going to be key during the switch to electric. As a leading supplier of EVs to the Motability Scheme, Vauxhall recently highlighted the urgent need for more council inclusive EV charging infrastructure, with the Motability Foundation estimating that 1.35 million disabled drivers will rely on public charging by 2035.
Motability Scheme research indicates that 65% of their customers will only switch to an EV when it’s unavoidable, while 45% say it’s difficult to locate nearby public charging points.
No Driveway? You Still Have Options
If you don’t have access to off-street parking, you won’t be left out. Instead of a home charger, Motability EV charging is still possible. Motability will provide you with a bp pulse subscription and a bundle of public charging credit. This gives you access to thousands of convenient charging locations across the UK at discounted rates. This is as well as the Go Charge app we mentioned earlier in the article.
