What is a mobility assessment?

A mobility assessment is a personalised appointment designed to help identify the most suitable vehicle adaptations for your needs.

At Mobility in Motion, we look at the real-life challenges that can come with travelling independently, whether that’s getting in and out of a vehicle safely, or finding a reliable way to load your wheelchair or mobility device.

It’s often described as a car adaptation assessment or vehicle adaptation assessment, and it’s one of the most effective ways to ensure the solutions you choose are genuinely right for you, not just “standard options”.

Mobility assessment vs driving assessment: what’s the difference?

This is a really common question, and it’s important.

A Mobility in Motion mobility assessment is NOT the same as a driving assessment.

A driving assessment for disabled drivers focuses on whether you can drive safely and what driving aids you may need (for example, hand controls, steering aids, left-foot accelerators, etc.).

A mobility assessment, on the other hand, is designed to identify the best adaptations for:

  • Seating and transfer support
  • Loading and storing a wheelchair or mobility device
  • Determine the exact style of driving aid based on usability and vehicle compatibility following your driving assessment

What adaptations can be recommended after an assessment?

After your mobility assessment, we’ll recommend a tailored package of vehicle adaptations based on how you use, or want to use, your vehicle day to day.

Rather than focusing on products first, we start by understanding your needs, then match the right solutions to you.

Vehicle access and getting in and out safely

We’ll begin by looking at how you access the vehicle and what support you may need to do this safely and comfortably. To understand this, we may ask:

  • Can you stand for short periods, and are you balanced?
  • Do you have enough upper body strength to assist with a seated transfer?
  • What postural support requirements do you have?

From this, we can recommend suitable access and transfer solutions, such as:

Driving adaptations (if applicable)

If you are driving or planning to drive, we’ll work alongside any findings from your disability driving assessment to ensure the recommended controls are right for you and your vehicle.

We’ll then refine the options based on:

  • Ease of use
  • Strength and dexterity
  • Vehicle compatibility

For example, if hand controls are recommended, we’ll talk you through different designs and features including grip styles, acceleration control and secondary functions, to ensure the setup feels comfortable and natural for you.

Wheelchair and mobility device stowage

If you use a wheelchair or mobility scooter, we’ll also assess how you’ll transport it safely and independently.

We’ll consider:

  • Whether your mobility device can be folded or dismantled
  • Whether you can stand for short periods during loading
  • The size and weight of your device
  • Compatibility with your chosen vehicle

From this, we can recommend the most suitable loading and stowage system, such as:

Why book a Mobility in Motion assessment?

Choosing the right adaptations can be life-changing, but it can also feel overwhelming. A mobility assessment helps remove the guesswork by giving you:

  • Clear, expert recommendations
  • Solutions based on your specific mobility needs (not generic options)
  • Confidence to try before you commit to adaptations
  • Advice tailored to your lifestyle and goals

Most importantly, it ensures your vehicle works for you and not the other way around.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a mobility assessment take?

Most of our Mobility in Motion assessments take around 60–90 minutes, depending on what solutions you’re exploring. This includes full product demonstrations to ensure that you are familiar with how the adaptations work, and that you feel comfortable to operate them.

When should you get a driving assessment instead?

If you’ve never driven with driving aids before, we strongly recommend a specialist driving assessment first.

You can read more here in our detailed guide: What to expect during a disability driving assessment

In many cases, customers benefit from both, but the right starting point depends on what you need help with.

Do I need a driving assessment for Motability?

Not always. If you’re already driving confidently and you’re looking at adaptations such as seating solutions or wheelchair loading systems, a mobility assessment is usually the most relevant step.

However, if your driving ability has changed or you’ve never used driving aids before, a driving assessment may be recommended. If you’re unsure, our team can advise you before you book.

Who does car adaptation assessments?

Mobility in Motion provides expert car adaptation assessments and vehicle adaptation assessments across the UK.
Our assessors understand both the practical side of adaptations and the real-life challenges drivers and passengers face, meaning your recommendations are based on what will work for you day to day, not just what fits the vehicle.

Where can I get my driving ability assessed?

If you need your driving ability assessed, you may be referred to a specialist driving assessment centre such as Driving Mobility.

If your main requirement is adaptations for access, comfort or wheelchair stowage, Mobility in Motion can carry out a mobility assessment and recommend a tailored solution package.
