Motability Cars For Drivers Under 25
The Motability Scheme allows disabled individuals in the UK to lease a brand new vehicle using their qualifying Mobility Allowance. For drivers aged under 25, the rules about which vehicles can be driven are slightly different, and there is further support available to help young people learn to drive and pass their driving test. In this article, we also pick out three of the best models currently available for younger disabled drivers.
Eligibility & Vehicle Restrictions For Young Drivers
Young drivers who qualify and who want to drive a Motability Scheme vehicle must adhere to certain criteria when ordering a new Motability car:
- Vehicle Power Limits: For petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles, drivers under 25 are restricted to cars with an ABI Insurance Group rating of 16 or lower and a power output not exceeding 120 brake horsepower (bhp). For electric vehicles, the limits are an ABI Insurance Group rating of 21 or lower and a power output up to 140 bhp.
- Driver Age Restrictions: Only one driver under the age of 21 is permitted on the Certificate of Motor Insurance. This individual must either be the disabled customer who the vehicle is for or reside at the same address.

Not many people know this, but young people who receive a qualifying Mobility Allowance can learn to drive from the age of 16, a year earlier than other drivers in the UK!
Support For Young Disabled Drivers
Recognising the challenges faced by young disabled drivers, the Motability Foundation (who run several Grant Programmes to support Motability customers) offers Driving Lesson Grants to eligible customers. Potential drivers can receive grants covering up to 40 hours of driving lessons. To qualify, applicants must have a provisional licence, a valid theory test pass certificate, and be in receipt of a qualifying means-tested benefit.
For more information, potential applicants should contact the Motability Foundation directly to apply. Once approved, lessons are typically conducted through the AA Driving School.
